Accesscu Budgeting
Set a 50/30/20 budget in the Accesscu app, automate savings with round-ups and four pots — all free for members.
The official methodology is detailed in the main overview.
Budgeting at a Glance
- The 50/30/20 rule splits income into needs, wants and savings, and Accesscu app categories map directly onto each bucket.
- The round-up feature saves an average of €120 a month per member by sweeping card change into savings.
- Four pots — emergency fund, bills, goals and fun money — can be created and automated in under five minutes.
- Budgeting tools are free and included with the €0 monthly personal checking account.
The 50/30/20 Rule With Accesscu Categories
The 50/30/20 rule splits net income into 50% needs, 30% wants and 20% savings; the Accesscu app assigns each spending category to a bucket automatically.
Once budgets are on, every transaction lands in one of the app's category groups and the main chart shows your needs, wants and savings totals against the 50/30/20 benchmark.
On €3,000 of monthly net income, the split is €1,500 for needs, €900 for wants and €600 for savings, as the table shows. If your cost of living runs high, many members start at 60/20/20 and tighten it over a few months.
| Bucket | Share | Example on €3,000/month | Accesscu app categories |
|---|---|---|---|
| Needs | 50% | €1,500 | Housing, Utilities, Groceries, Insurance |
| Wants | 30% | €900 | Dining, Subscriptions, Travel, Entertainment |
| Savings | 20% | €600 | Savings pot, Term Deposit, Round-up balance |
Round-Up: €120 a Month on Average
Accesscu round-up sweeps the change from every card purchase into savings; across the member panel the average round-up total is €120 a month.
In the 2025 member panel of 3,200 members, the average round-up from a single purchase was €2.14 and the average member counted 56 card purchases a month — €119.84, effectively €120 a month, diverted from small change to savings.
Round-ups land in your savings pot the day after the purchase, so the feature works without any fiddling or extra money from your pay packet.
- Every card purchase is rounded up to the next euro and the difference moves to your chosen pot.
- Typical member results: 56 purchases a month at €2.14 per round-up — just under €120.
- Set a multiplier (x1 up to x5) or a daily cap, and switch the feature off any time from the app.
- Round-ups never touch money you have not spent: they only move leftover cents from purchases you already made.
The categories did what my notebook never managed: the 50/30/20 split is on screen from day one. My round-up is sitting at €118 this month and the emergency pot fills itself while I watch it climb.
Round-ups plus an automated payday transfer moved me from saving occasionally to saving €380 a month. The four pots keep my holiday fund genuinely untouchable, which was the whole point for me.
Setting Up Your Four Pots
Create four pots — emergency fund, bills, goals and fun money — in the app, then automate a weekly top-up so savings run without any effort.
Pots separate money so you always know what each euro is for: the emergency fund covers surprises, the bills pot smooths paydays, goals pot places official targets, and fun money sets a spending limit that does not touch your bills.
The whole setup takes about five minutes and can be finished from the app's quick-start template.
- Open Pots in the app
Tap Pots on the Home screen and choose the four-pot starter template.
- Create the four pots
Name them Emergency Fund, Bills, Goals and Fun Money, then set a target for each — €3,000 for emergencies is the recommended starter target.
- Automate the round-up
Switch Round-Up on and set its destination to Emergency Fund with a daily cap that suits your spending.
- Schedule a weekly transfer
Add a Fixed Transfer from checking to your pots each payday and split it across the four destinations.
- Review monthly
Open Monthly Rewind once a month, compare pot progress against last month, and rebalance any surplus.
Free Budgeting Tools in the App
Every budgeting tool is free: the spending chart, Monthly Rewind, round-up dashboard, pot targets and a 12-month export of categorised transactions.
No extra subscription or add-on exists — budgets, categories, pots and round-ups ship with every account, including the €0 monthly personal checking.
- Spending chart: bucket bars colour-coded to the 50/30/20 split for each month.
- Monthly Rewind: an end-of-month summary that compares this month with the previous one.
- Round-up dashboard: total diverted to savings since you joined and per-month figures.
- Pot progress: percentage to target and the projected completion date for each pot.
- Export: 12 months of categorised transactions as a file for any external budgeting tool.
Making 50/30/20 Stick
The method only works if the savings share is automated: pay yourself first on payday and check the app's Rewind screen instead of tallying receipts.
Budget failures come from manual tracking, not bad maths. Automate the transfer on the same day salary is received, and let categories do the counting.
Trim the wants bucket first when tightening a budget: the app's subscriptions category lists every recurring charge in one screen.
- Automate the 20% savings transfer on payday before anything else is spent.
- Use the subscriptions category to find recurring charges you had forgotten about.
- Recheck the split quarterly, especially if your rent or salary changes.
- How do I set up a 50/30/20 budget in the Accesscu app?
- Turn on Budgets under Tools, map each app category to Needs, Wants or Savings, and the monthly chart will show your split against the 50/30/20 benchmark.
- How much does round-up save on average?
- The average member saves about €120 a month — roughly €2.14 per round-up across about 56 card purchases.
- How many pots can I create?
- The recommended starter set is four — emergency fund, bills, goals and fun money — and you can add up to ten pots at no cost.
- Is budgeting functionality free?
- Yes — budgets, categories, pots, round-ups and Rewind are included in every membership, and personal checking costs €0 a month.
- Does money in pots still earn interest?
- Yes — pot balances are held in your savings account, so they build interest at the same tiered rates as the rest of your savings.
This method does NOT apply to irregular freelance incomes; round-ups work less reliably there.
A 2024 pilot showed category auto-sorting over-allocated 7% of small purchases; we revised the classifier in Q1 2025 after complaints.
