Accesscu Investments

The credit union investment lane: fixed term deposits and tiered savings — known yields, no market risk, no broker.

The official methodology is detailed in the main overview.

Accesscu Investment Options

Accesscu Investment Options

Accesscu offers two investment vehicles — a fixed 12-month term deposit at 3.1% AER and tiered savings at 1.0–2.5% AER — and offers no stockbroking of any kind.

Both options are cash instruments. Your money does not leave the credit union's balance sheet: it is lent to other members in the form of mortgages and personal loans, or held as liquidity. That simplicity is the draw.

Since 2015 Accesscu has never had a year of negative performance on any investor product, because there is no market exposure to have a negative year.

What €5,000–€250,000 Earns

At the current 3.1% AER a 12-month term deposit earns €155 gross on €5,000, €3,100 on €100,000 and €7,750 on €250,000 per year.

The table uses gross annual interest on the current 12-month term deposit rate, assumed constant for the full year. Interest is credited at maturity; deposits are monthly-credited in savings accounts, not term deposits.

One honest caveat: the Deposit Guarantee Scheme covers €100,000 per member per credit union, so anything above that level in a single name is uninsured. For balances above €100,000 we recommend splitting across credit unions rather than chasing a few basis points.

I moved my savings from a post office account into a 12-month term deposit at 3.1% AER in about ten minutes. It's locked, it's insured to €100,000, and the interest is a known number — which suits me far better than any fund.

Before Accesscu I checked my brokerage account daily and loathed weeks when nothing went up. Now my money is in savings tiers and one term deposit. The 2.5% AER tier is where my €18,000 sits and honestly I sleep better.

Why Credit Unions Don't Trade Stocks

Irish credit union regulation prohibits stockbroking, so Accesscu cycles member deposits into member lending instead of shares, ETFs or hedge funds.

This is by design, not by omission. A credit union's statutory purpose is to serve its members with savings and credit — nothing in the mandate involves market trading on members' behalf.

The practical benefit is simple: no brokerage costs, no annual-fee creep, no market drawdowns, and a rate card you can quote from memory.

The Risk-Averse Approach

Accesscu investing is deliberately boring: fixed AER rates, monthly compounding, DGS insurance to €100,000 and a known exit point for every product.

The design follows member survey data: in the 2024 survey of 12,000 members, 74% said the most important investment property was knowing the return in advance, ahead of chasing maximum yield.

If you want stock-market exposure, Accesscu is the wrong shop — and we'd rather tell you that honestly than sell you a product outside our lane. Options like investment funds should be bought from firms regulated for that service.

How to Start

Start by topping up a savings account or opening a term deposit in the member app, choosing the term, and funding the amount from checking.

A term deposit is confirmed in writing before any money moves, and the offered rate is locked for 60 days so you can compare without pressure.

  1. Open a term deposit

Tap Invest in the app, pick the 12-month term, and enter an amount from €1,000.

  2. Confirm the rate

Review the written rate confirmation at 3.1% AER, which holds for 60 days.

  3. Fund from checking

Transfer from your Accesscu checking account; interest is paid at maturity.

  4. Track it

Watch the deposit grow in the app and get an alert 30 days before maturity.

Does Accesscu offer stocks?
No — Accesscu offers no stocks, ETFs, funds or share trading; all investment products are term deposits and tiered savings accounts.
What are my investment options at Accesscu?
Two: a fixed 12-month term deposit at 3.1% AER from €1,000, and tiered savings paying 1.0% to 2.5% AER with the top rate on balances over €10,000.
How much can I invest?
Members typically invest €5,000–€250,000; note that balances above €100,000 exceed DGS insurance, so large sums should be split across credit unions.
Can I withdraw my term deposit before maturity?
Yes — early withdrawal is allowed, with interest paid to the exit date less a penalty of 90 days' interest.
Is my investment protected if Accesscu fails?
Term deposits and savings are insured to €100,000 per member under the Deposit Guarantee Scheme; no Accesscu product can lose value through market movement.

This method does NOT apply to equity fund deposits, which Accesscu does not offer.

Yield projections use the December 2024 ECB rate; rates moved twice since, so forward estimates are stale.
